Tonga was great fun …

We arrived at a magnificent new (Chinese paid for) concrete cruise ship wharf in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, with a point blank view of the old Royal Palace.

IMG_1515

It was a special day … the opening of parliament by the King. If you look closely you will see all the school kids turned out on the lawns in front of the Palace to greet the King.

The timing couldn’t have been better. We walked off the ship, straight into the crowds waiting for the event at 10:30. Kids everywhere, all turned out in their special uniforms. And, what was probably the whole Tongan navy “on guard” outside Parliament House. That’s Parliament House, with the red roof, looking a bit like a country church hall!

IMG_1521   IMG_1523

The king arrived, stayed about 10 minutes, and left again. (Very efficient!). That’s him, bare headed, getting into his Mercedes van after the opening! He drove right past us and waved.

IMG_1528

Whilst we were standing around in the crowd (not a policeman with a gun in sight!), we got talking to a friendly local. Actually, they’re all friendly.

“Wanna take a tour of the island?”
“Thanks, but we’ve hired an Avis Car.”
“Don’t worry about that. People forget to turn up all the time. I’ll take you for the same money.”
Pause … whilst the King arrived …

“So, are you are a security guard?”
“Nah, I just have that written on my shirt … makes you feel safe. Ha ha.”
We warmed to him …
“I’m Geoff, what’s your name?”
“Neil”
“Really?”
“Neil Armstrong.”
“You’re kidding.”
“Nah. I was born the day Armstrong landed on the moon, so my dad named me after him.”
Hmmm …

“You got a good car?”
“Real good mate, big, a Mazda van thing.”
We were convinced.

So after a haggle over the price, and sorting out just what currency we were talking in, we ploughed off through the crowd, ignoring all the attempts by some to control members of the crowd like us, and found Neil’s van.
Hmmmm … pretty special … 30+ years old, rust, one headlight, duct tape, paint peeling off, middle seats missing, flattened cardboard boxes for floor covering, no upholstery – seats covered with bedding, badly cracked (passenger side) windscreen, one wiper only for the driver, and wooden wedges to hold the side windows up beacuse the winders had long since busted. Not to worry. In we got, and it started and ran like a Mazda. Perfect!!

Off we went. The boys in front, and Jan lounging in the back like the queen of Tonga.

IMG_4041   IMG_4101

… we visited Tonga’s mysterious “stonehenge” … even Neil and some mates would have had difficulty with these 40 tonners …

IMG_4044

… then to the south coast for some serious offroading through long grass

IMG_4046

… to where the coast is not protected by a reef and the swell pounds the cliffs …

IMG_1543

… at one place we drove (well bounced really) past a huge hole where a cave roof had collapsed, and very tentatively peered in …

IMG_1548

… then a rare secluded little beach …

IMG_4047

But then we had the feed the man …

IMG_1594   IMG_1563

… at beautiful Keleti beach … great for looking, not great for surfing …

IMG_1556

Then to a spot famous for blowholes, where we got quite close up and personal with the wild sea.

IMG_4086   IMG_4077

…and to another beach for lovers (according to Neil) … not much sand here, just lots of sharp coral and rocks waiting to shred your feet.

IMG_1576   IMG_4099

And so, after a great day (despite the persistant rain showers on the cracked windscreen with no wiper on my side!), Neil dropped us back near the Royal Palace. We spotted one sleepy guard near this gate, but no problem sticking the iPhone through the fence for a close-up of the grand old building.

IMG_4097   IMG_4096

Tonga is obviously a very poor place. Tourism and overseas remittances from relatives sustain it, apparently. We saw some very poor villages, lots of degenerating cars and buildings, many vacant houses. Farming with 50+ year old tractors is very basic in the amazingly fertile soils.

Sad really, but Tongans all seem so cheerful.

Auckland was freezing cold …

We were supposed to call at Tauranga on Sunday to go to Rotorua for the day. But because the harbour entrance is narrow, and the wind was furious, old Flokos the captain said we couldn’t go in! … damn! … this is as close as we got …

IMG_1456

The Bay of Plenty had given us plenty the previous night and the wind gave us rainbows in the sea-spray most of the morning …

IMG_1463

Then to Auckland … freezing cold westerly wind blowing rain showers through at a good clip most of the day.

We got the local number 274 bus to Mount Eden, climbed to the top, and peered into the crater!

IMG_1473

Between showers, a great view of the city … and the rainbow just missed the world home of All Blacks rugby …

IMG_3997   IMG_1472

Then a 277 bus back to the Ferry Terminal …

IMG_1505

… to commute across to the (very posh looking) suburb/village of Devonport.

IMG_1487   IMG_1486

Walked up Mount Victoria (yes another walk up!) for great views of the city and the harbour … as you can see Jan remembered her gloves today, and brought a beanie for me … very grateful I was too!

IMG_4001   IMG_4005

Then back to the city for a walk along the waterfront … some are obviously doing it pretty tough around here … (not!)

IMG_1493   IMG_4016

Then, after about 12km walking for the day, farewell to New Zealand, and off to warmer climes in Tonga …

Visiting the Lillywhites …

Here’s the news from Napier New Zealand … home to the finest collection of Art Deco buildings in one place in the world …

IMG_1437

… and also home to Colin and Toni Lillywhite and their kids Ava, 7 and Christopher, 5. Toni and Colin are in Paris today (sigh!), so Grandma Lillywhite and Aunty Lynette are over from Australia to babysit for a couple of weeks. The weather turned today – cold, and rain later, but we had a fabulous day anyway, thanks to our wonderful hosts.

IMG_3989

The kids ran in the park and then clowned with Jan outside the old Gentleman’s Club.

IMG_1429

Then Jan found this gorgeous Art Deco building (used to be the AMP) …

IMG_1436

But what’s inside? … an opportunity for Jan to educate Ava on the finer things in life, of course! (spot them both on the middle here …)

IMG_1435

Then Ava showed us her Daddy’s beautiful Art Deco office building.

IMG_1439

Then up the hill to home for a warm soup for lunch … afterwards Nana Nailpolish had to do her thing while Christopher showed us his “moves”

IMG_3990   IMG_3991

A great day had by all, on one when a cozy warm home is all you need …

Marlborough New Zealand

Insignia sneaked up to Picton at the end of the Queen Charlotte Sound before sunrise …

IMG_1359

… then gradually, a gorgeous crisp autumn morning greeted us in the little town …

IMG_1364

… so it was off in our rental car for a tour of the Marlborough Sounds. (Jan complaining again about leaving her gloves on the ship!)

But that was soon forgotten as the scene unfolded … a postcard around every corner.

IMG_1365

How’s the serenity here?

IMG_1370   IMG_1375

It’s no wonder the Kiwis can grow stuff … you could grow anything in this lush countryside …

IMG_1380

And what about this secluded gem: Mistletoe Bay?

IMG_1381

But wait … there’s good wine in these parts, says Jan … so it was on to a deli lunch at Giesen … here we admired how well they keep the grass in the vineyards and Jan came away with two souvenirs!!!

IMG_1394   IMG_1398

Then on to Cloudy Bay …

IMG_1400   IMG_1401

… and so it was through prosperous looking Blenheim and back to Picton, where it seems everyone must own a boat!! … we would too if we lived with this water wonderland at the front door.

IMG_1408

Then back along the Sound and off to Napier …

IMG_1412

Marlborough in a day? Hmmm … you could relax here for a week, or a month, or maybe even more!

Crossing the Tasman …

Crossing the Tasman can be problematic, but our three day and four night crossing from Hobart to Picton was pretty good … it started out very nicely … as Jan enjoyed a very late breakfast …

IMG_1297

then lunch …

IMG_1301

… and even afternoon teeaaa … cup cakes and cucumber sandwich, no less!!!

IMG_1348

Just one of the days was a bit bleak and rainy … and the outside decks were closed …

IMG_1299   IMG_1316

… but then the weather just got better and better as we got closer to New Zealand … and we were allowed on deck again …

IMG_3954   IMG_1349

… now for Marlborough … a Cloudy Bay might be on the menu!!

Terrific Tasmania …

We rolled out of Sydney on Saturday night, but the further south we went on Sunday, the flatter the sea became … so much for the terrors of Bass Strait!

Perfect morning on deck …

IMG_3802    IMG_3804

… and a perfect sunset over Flinders Island (or thereabouts)

IMG_1245

And how about this for a crystal clear autumn Monday morning in Hobart?

IMG_1246

Jan reckoned it was a little on the chilly side … but 7 degrees on top of Mount Wellington (with no wind!) at 9am wasn’t really that bad, and certainly worth every little shiver …

IMG_3927   IMG_3926

It has to be one of the best sights in Australia, any time of day or year …

IMG_1250

Then back to our trusty Avis rental and down to the Cascades (convict) Female Factory and then to the Cascade Brewery for a tour and lunch … free beer with our beef and stout pie … Yum!

IMG_3934

Everyone said we should go to MONA. So we did. Hmmm …

IMG_3936   IMG_1268

It’s set in gorgeous surroundings and grounds, the modern buildings and facilities are great. The main museum building, virtually carved out of the sandstone cliff is quite extraordinary. Some of the outdoor exhibits were interesting, but the exhibits inside …? We’re sure there are others who get it … maybe we’re just too philistine … or maybe the “king’s new clothes” might be relevant? There were certainly lots of arty farty (and pretentious) types about, who appeared to appreciate the art … or was it the wine?

IMG_3942   IMG_1282

So off we went for a drive around Battery Point and Salamanca, then a walk back to the ship past Constitution Dock.

IMG_1285   IMG_1288

Now for a smooth ride across the Tasman Sea?

… and then off we go …

At last, after all that planning and preparation, we were off on the train to meet the ship …

IMG_1209    IMG_1221

Gorgeous Autumn day in Sydney … and it’s all happening at Circular Quay.

IMG_1222

Home for the next 5 months is pretty compact, but it’s amazing what you can get into a small space, and what you can store under a bed!

IMG_1224

… and, of course the roof-top deck is pretty nice …

IMG_1234

… so, if I can just stay awake long enough, there’s time for drink !!!

IMG_1227

But, now we’re off … backwards around here under the bridge …

IMG_1233

… then across Circular Quay …

IMG_1237

… and it’s farewell to beautiful Sydney at dusk …
